Trump Round Two: What does this mean for India?

We all remember the day Trump visited India and was met with resounding appreciation. The current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, member of the right-leaning Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is close with former President Trump. Both have referred to each other as “my friend,” and Trump even said Modi was, “The nicest human being.”

Biden’s visit to New Delhi in 2023 brought significant criticism from the liberal west, who urged him to discuss India’s problematic domestic policy that harms marginalized communities. Trump, however, does not seem to be bothered by Modi’s domestic policy or his reluctance to support Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which was a stance taken to protect Russian weapon and oil imports.

Uday Chandra, a professor of government at Georgetown University in Qatar, compared the views of Trump and Modi in an interview with AP news: “they’re also united by a shared worldview — that we are in a post-liberal world and that liberalism as an ideology for conducting global politics is no longer viable.”

Liberalism promotes interdependence and collaboration between countries, and Trump is famously described as an isolationist with his “America first” policy. Both sides of the aisle seem to agree with domesticating US markets, but Trump takes it a step further with his reluctance to provide foreign aid and his affinity for high tariffs, which liberals tend to oppose due to the increased consumer price. It seems that indian businesses will take a hit with these tariffs, as the US is the single largest importer of US goods. This is all speculative, though. It remains to be seen what a second Trump term really means for India.
