Pollution in Lahore
Pakistan’s second largest city is faced with unprecedented levels of pollution with the air quality index (AQI) reaching a score of up to 1900 in the city’s outskirts. The municipality government and Punjab government closed primary schools, banned rickshaws and three-wheelers for the time being, and halted some degree of building work. People were instructed to stay indoors as much as possible. The Punjab government allowed schools to reopen starting November 20th, after upwards of a week of closure.
South Asia tends to suffer pollution every winter as cold air traps pollutants in the lowest layer of earth's atmosphere. Dust, smoke, and burning of farmland to clear for the coming season causes this to be even more noticeable. Officials have been vocal in also blaming poor vehicle fuel quality and over construction and industrial activity in the area. Officials are also looking towards India, where northern regions are battling similar hazardous air quality. Pakistan is looking to have the potential of finding a solution to this toxic air with India through the foreign ministry.
